This show contains one of Dr. Dave's clearest consulting principles. After a failed automated-car demonstration, he tells listeners not to accept a claim merely because Microsoft, Google, Fiat or Volvo made it—and then adds, with characteristic humility, “When I say something, check it out.” He follows Gerald Weinberg's maxim that no matter what the technology appears to be doing, it is ultimately a people problem. Earlier, a request for “the best computer” prompts the practical question Dr. Dave always asks first: what does the client actually need it to do? The episode also preserves his little-known graphic-design skill, his explanation of turning rough bitmaps into smooth custom lettering and a snapshot of the moment ordinary printers and stereo receivers were quietly becoming computers.
