May 11, 2013
Dr. Dave argues that people who need technical help are not idiots and that good designers and consultants should give them understandable choices instead of forcing everyone into one interface. A warmer moment finds him remembering drives with Dr. Dave's son Nick when they turned up Earth, Wind & Fire and sang together, while another extended exchange captures Dr. Dave and Evil Steve's shared inability to leave motorcycles, cars and computers alone. The show also preserves his design maxim that simplicity does not have to be ugly, his experiment running much of his working life from local spreadsheets and a 2013 debate over whether smartphones and computers would squeeze tablets out of the market. Political and security discussions consider three-dimensional printed gun files, cloud exposure, law-enforcement access to phones and the difference between appearing to act on a danger and addressing its cause.
