January 3, 2009
The first show of 2009 captures Dr. Dave and Evil Steve deciding that useful work cannot wait for a website to be permanently finished. They agree to publish the material in careful portions, warn people honestly about dangerous tools and balance independence with respect for one's limits; Dr. Dave adds that much of his own expertise began with persistence before he fully knew what he was doing. Callers demonstrate the collaborative side of the program when Dan offers an alternate explanation for Bob's disabled Task Manager and Dr. Dave incorporates it rather than defending his first suspicion. The brothers also laugh over Dr. Dave's “encrypted” handwriting and remember a son's school assignment turning genealogy from something Dr. Dave mocked into a family history he valued. Historical discussions include supplier accountability during NVIDIA's defective-chip controversy, Dr. Dave's reluctance to endorse a newly improved product before extended use, Windows XP aboard British submarines and the debate over opening Mac OS X to clone hardware.
