December 27, 2008

The December 27 show begins with the Mason family's Christmas gathering and becomes a sustained argument about whether constant online communication improves a person's life. Dr. Dave initially compares Twitter enthusiasm with dot-com-bubble hype and insists that technology should produce something of value, but caller Mary gives him practical examples and he openly revises the breadth of his criticism in favor of rational, proportional use. Caller Larry remembers the sound and force of an F-4 Phantom over his Vietnam base, while another exchange contrasts Linux enthusiasm with the needs and time of an ordinary user. The last segment contains a particularly relevant preservation lesson: keep the large original photograph and create different derivatives for email, web and print. When the broadcast computer fails at the end, Dr. Dave and Evil Steve fill the time with spontaneous “reality radio,” and Dr. Dave says how much he enjoys using the show to address subjects other media ignore.
