October 4, 2008
The October 4 show develops Dr. Dave's idea of control. People cannot direct the economy, politics or the press, but they can choose their daily work and stop accepting technology as something that simply victimizes them. Calls show what that looks like: investigate a frightening warning without panicking, stay calm and methodical when software resists, reassure a struggling caller that difficulty is not stupidity, decide whether a workaround saves time or conceals a deeper failure and let one listener contribute the answer she learned to another listener's problem. The personal texture includes a birthday gathering for Dr. Dave and Evil Steve's younger sister Linda. The show closes by returning to its opening warning about sensational media through a false online report that Steve Jobs had suffered a heart attack, while other moments preserve the original archive's delayed posting, early websites for legacy software and Dr. Dave's admission that his desire to fix things can exceed reasonable limits.
