June 14, 2008

The June 14 show brings politics, media, music, humor and major technology history together. Rather than treating his initial anger over a Supreme Court ruling as sufficient, Dr. Dave says “Dr. Dave Mason doesn't matter” and returns to the Constitution and Federalist Papers to test what the institution is supposed to do. The death of Tim Russert then becomes a genuinely warm cross-part tribute. Betty recalls that Russert learned she refused her son's Sunday calls during Meet the Press and quietly sent her a package and handwritten note; Dr. Dave values him not because they agreed, but because Russert worked hard, knew his material and listened to the other side without flamethrower theatrics. The next hour opens with Dr. Dave marveling at Verdine White's airborne energy in one of the most powerful concerts he had seen before comparing it with his new appreciation for Randy Travis. An apparent fictional spokesman named Lloyd Kengular then argues that unreliable hard drives are environmentally virtuous because they create recycling work—even lost memories can be recycled—until his own phone dies on cue. The Apple update captures the new 3G iPhone, its lower purchase price, developer opening and Dr. Dave's belief that early adopters finance the affordable next generation. Finally, Flag Day prompts the brothers to discuss respectful display, and Dr. Dave credits both Cub Scouts and his American traditions before they head to a monster-truck race.
