December 2, 2006

The first December show brings Dr. Dave's son Nick and the whole family into the studio, then sends Dr. Dave back to an early argument with Uncle Randy about whether the Commodore 64 or TI-99/4A would endure. His consulting philosophy emerges when he insists that a supposedly new computer should really be new, distinguishes a professional from an intense hobbyist and asks an angry caller to give the visiting technician a chance to succeed. Dr. Dave turns a client’s absurd support escalation into a story about discovering the secret phrase “may I speak to your manager,” then reassures listeners that everyone struggles with technology and has become an involuntary beta tester. Personal memories of accidentally hitting Evil Steve with a pellet gun and Mrs. Mason buying a camera after waiting too long for Dr. Dave sit beside broader questions about consumer choice, unsecured wireless networks and whether electronic voting can be independently audited.
