Dr. Dave repeatedly returns to a careful troubleshooting principle: step back from the apparent symptom, test the simplest underlying cause and avoid actions that could make damaged hardware worse. Novice caller Bill receives patient instructions and a reminder that callers like him are the reason the show exists, while another marketplace conversation produces Dr. Dave’s rule that a bargain should be cheap enough that a total loss would not matter. The show records several major technology transitions, including Microsoft’s announcement of Zune, speech recognition working without lengthy training, an experimental Google search designed for screen reader users and attackers following the growing MySpace audience. Amid the anniversary giveaways, Dr. Dave and Evil Steve also question whether games and gadgets are displacing direct experience when children can climb a virtual mountain but have never climbed a backyard tree.
