September 10, 2005
Dr. Dave says much of his knowledge came from first doing things the wrong way, making him a kind of universal beta tester who could spare listeners some of the same struggle. On the eve of the September 11 anniversary, he recalls Computer Talk becoming a national show only months before the attacks and later contrasts the Katrina response of everyday people with the conduct of political leaders. A substantial interview with Sling Media founder Blake Krikorian traces Slingbox from frustration over baseball blackouts to a flooded hot tub prototype, while emphasizing user experience, memorable design and support for customers. The show also captures hidden printer tracking marks, early music phones that struggled as telephones, browser competition, phishing and Dr. Dave’s memory of Bill Gates arguing about compatibility at an early Comdex.
