September 3, 2005
In the days after Hurricane Katrina, Dr. Dave and Evil Steve send their thoughts to Gulf Coast listeners, encourage whatever help people can offer and deliberately continue with a familiar program so radio can provide a small sense of normal life. Dr. Dave remembers childhood football with Evil Steve, explains why technology must make him meaningfully more effective and accepts a listener’s on air correction when he confuses Safari with older Mac browsers. The show documents a striking fall in computer prices between 1997 and 2005, Microsoft’s early Windows Vista roadmap and a New Orleans Internet provider that kept operating on a generator and buried fiber while much of the city’s infrastructure had failed. It also marks a milestone for Computer Talk itself: archived audio from the current broadcast was expected to appear on DaveMason.com later the same day.
