Dr. Dave argues that businesses should expect technology to fail and prepare backups, alternate connections and even manual procedures before a breakdown stops their work. Pure Digital chief executive Jonathan Kaplan discusses an early one time use video camcorder, while Dr. Dave remembers working in a camera store and watching automated photo labs change the industry. Other historical subjects include a sensor filled baby monitor and the broader growth of surveillance, perpendicular hard drive recording and practical digital photography. The show’s lighter moments include Dr. Dave and Evil Steve inventing flattering eBay descriptions for a battered tool, Dr. Dave answering “what changed?” with “they broke,” and a consulting story in which cheap paper made a perfectly good new printer appear defective.
